SCHOOL REFORM COMMISSION APPROVES KIPP-PARKSIDE CHARTER APPLICATION
K-8 school approved with conditions and will have a planning year in 2018-2019 and open in the 2019-2020 school year
PHILADELPHIA—Today, the School Reform Commission approved with conditions the charter application of KIPP Parkside Charter School. The K-8 school will be located in the West Philadelphia Parkside neighborhood and will serve 860 students when fully enrolled.
“At the end of the day our #1 focus is improving learning opportunities for the children of Philadelphia. This means developing high quality schools regardless of sector,” said Chair of the School Reform Commission Joyce Wilkerson. “This process has been thorough and it has been rigorous, as it should be. This process is a fundamental component of our work to increase quality options for Philadelphia students.”
The KIPP Parkside application is a college preparatory program that focuses on academics and character education. The charter school application and review process is mandated by law and guided by strict legal code. This year the process has been thorough and transparent.
This review process has included: 2 rounds of public hearings amounting to 13 hours of public hearings, an additional 4 hours of open public testimony, letters offering public comment, and 3 comprehensive evaluation reports – one for each applicant – reviewed by a team of internal and external evaluators.
