SCHOOL DISTRICT LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO HIRE UP TO 1,000 NEW TEACHERS FOR THE 2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR

Positions also include nurses and counselors -- those interested in applying should visit PhilaSD.org to apply

PHILADELPHIA –  Today The School District of Philadelphia announced the beginning of an exciting recruiting campaign to hire up to 1,000 new teachers for the 2017-2018 school year.  Prospective candidates can apply today at https://jobs.philasd.org.

“This is a great time to teach and work in the School District of Philadelphia.  We are hiring and continue to add to our teacher force, especially in the areas of early literacy.  We are in the second year of a $440 million investment plan and we are seeing progress across the city,”  said Dr. William R. Hite, Superintendent. “Every day I see the tremendous impact our teachers make in the lives of our students.  I urge anyone who is interested in teaching and working in the School District of Philadelphia to join us and make an impact today in the lives of our students.”

The School District of Philadelphia is making an early, aggressive push on hiring teachers, given the investments the District is making including additional positions that have been added in recent years such as nurses, counselors and early literacy specialists.

The District once again has a focus on hiring teachers in grades K-3 and the 9th grade based on our Anchor Goals.

“We know how important the early grades are to children reading on grade levels and how critical 9th grade is in order for students to graduate high school on time,” Dr. Hite added.

In addition to highly qualified K-3 and 9th grade teachers, The School District of Philadelphia is also looking to hire individuals with the following experience: upper elementary (grades 4-8), secondary math and science (grades 5-12), special education, music, foreign language, bilingual Spanish education and dual certifications in math, science, and special education, in order to meet the needs of our student population.

The District will host a Teacher Information Session at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 6 at 440 North Broad Street, where Dr. Hite will welcome teacher candidates and District staff will share guidance about the teacher application process. All interested candidates are encouraged to attend.

The launch of the teacher application is part of a larger detailed plan of the School District’s to more quickly fill vacancies with a large, diverse pipeline of candidates, allow principals to  more nimbly address teacher issues in schools, and ensure principals are retaining great teachers.  The plan includes the following:

  • Hiring teachers earlier in the process
  • Continuing the District’s program to hire additional supplemental teachers to help fill vacancies when they arise
  • Managing and growing our student teaching partnerships
  • Strengthening and expanding existing university recruiting partnerships
  • Continuing to execute high-quality teacher recruitment
  • Launching teacher residency program and continuing to expand work with alternate route programs to broaden base and diversity of recruiting pool
  • Continuing strong teacher candidate support
  • Enhancing outreach programs to recruit and hire teachers of color
Candidates who apply by March 27 and meet the District's qualifications will be able to interview with schools for specific openings as early as April.  The District’s starting salary for teachers with no prior teaching experience is $45,360, and candidates with previous experience or graduate degrees will have this reflected in a higher starting salary. Starting salaries for counselors and nurses are $45,360 and $51,113, respectively.

As part of this effort, the District recently began a multi-week recruiting media campaign featuring current teachers talking about their experiences teaching in The School District of Philadelphia.  The campaign is comprised of radio ads, electronic billboards, digital video, web banner ads, and social media outreach.

Prospective candidates can apply today at https://jobs.philasd.org and candidates are also encouraged to contact recruitment@philasd.org for more information.
